How the Champions League works now

Europe’s top club competition now uses a single league phase. Each club plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away. The top eight go straight to the round of 16, and clubs ranked 9 to 24 meet in a two-legged knockout play-off. After that it’s two-legged knockout ties up to a one-off final in late May or early June. Because every league-phase point counts towards seeding, even the late matchdays carry real stakes.

Champions League kick-off times in SAST

Champions League nights fall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with most games kicking off at 21:00 SAST and an earlier slot at 18:45 SAST. Some league-phase rounds also use Thursdays. Because South Africa is only one or two hours ahead of Central Europe, these are prime-time games here. Prices open days in advance, so you can compare odds well before kick-off.

Reading Champions League odds

League-phase and knockout games are priced as 1X2: home, draw, away. In a two-legged tie, the first leg is a normal 90-minute match, so a draw is a real result. For the second leg, check whether you’re betting on the 90-minute result or to qualify, which includes extra time and penalties. With decimal odds, R100 at 3.40 returns R340.

Markets worth knowing

To qualify: which club goes through, available on knockout ties. Both teams to score and over/under goals are popular because European nights often produce open games. Handicap markets even out mismatches between the giants and smaller clubs. Outright winner is a long-term bet on who lifts the trophy, and its price moves as the competition goes on.

Things to check before you bet

Squad rotation matters: clubs that have already qualified sometimes rest players. Away goals no longer count as a tie-breaker, so level aggregate scores go to extra time. Domestic schedules matter too, since a big league match at the weekend can affect a team’s line-up midweek. For weekend league action, see our Premier League odds and European football odds.
