How basketball odds work

Basketball is a two-way sport for betting. Overtime settles a tied game, so the main market is the moneyline (match winner, including overtime): you pick the home team or the away team, and the board above shows both prices. Betshezi uses decimal odds, so a R50 bet at 1.80 returns R90, your R50 stake plus R40 profit. The shorter the price, the more likely the bookmaker thinks that result is.

Some markets are settled on regulation time only (four quarters, without overtime). Those can include a draw option, so always check the market name on the bet slip before you confirm.

NBA odds in South African time

Most NBA games tip off between 01:00 and 05:00 SAST, which suits night owls and early risers. Prices are available well before tip-off, so you can place pre-match bets the evening before. The NBA regular season runs from late October to April, with the play-offs and Finals following into June. Back-to-back games, travel and rest days all affect team strength, so check injury news before you bet.

EuroLeague and European basketball

If you’d rather bet at a more friendly hour, European basketball tips off in the South African evening. The EuroLeague is the continent’s top club competition, and domestic leagues such as Spain’s Liga ACB, Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s BBL, France’s Pro A and the Greek Basket League fill the week. Popular basketball markets

Point spread (handicap): the favourite must win by more than the line, and the underdog can lose by less than it. Total points (over/under): a bet on whether both teams’ combined score goes over or under a set number. Quarter and half markets: the same bets on a single quarter or half. Player props: points, rebounds or assists for a named player on selected games. Start with the moneyline and totals, then try the others once you’re comfortable.

Betting live on basketball

Basketball scores change every few seconds, so live odds move quickly. Runs of points are common, and a ten-point lead can disappear in two minutes. If you bet in-play, decide your stake before the game starts and don’t increase it to chase a comeback. When a price shows a lock, the market is briefly suspended while the odds update.
